René Groebli
Its friends, well-known Swiss photographers Jakob Tuggener and Robert Frank had large influence on the early photographic work René Groeblis. The subjectivity in Robert Franks work busy René Groebli and led it to its own subjective-poetic picture language. Groebli wanted to photograph, what is not visible: Movement, dynamics and speed as with the "Rail Magic", a trailblazing photo essay, which was 1949 developed and in an interaction of smoke, smell, landscape, romance and tendency the French steam railway has feelings as symbol of the strength symbol light and as with "The Eye of Love", a photographic dear poem, a work of fully timeless poetry, which 1953 developed.
Also the photographer Edward Steichen, at that time already curator at the museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, was impressed of the series "Eye of Love", which 1954 appeared as small book in an edition from 1000 pieces. Together with Robert Frank came Edward Steichen 1953 to Zurich, in order to investigate for its large exhibition project "The Family of Man". Steichen visited that at that time 26 year old photographer Groebli, whose sitting act from the available series he acquired immediately for the renowned photographic collection of the MoMA. In addition Groebli was invited from him to participate in the show "Family of Man".
The late wedding journey of René Groebli and his Mrs. Rita in the year 1953 led the two to Paris and Southern France. The series developed there is a concentration on a temporally short and emotional situation. The pictures captivate the play with the silhouette, the absorbed light, the deep shade, the contrast of sharpness and unsharpness, veiling and revealing by the beauty of the movements. They live on the suggestion and the association. One sees still life, a interieur of the hotel room, a view from the window, a scene in the neighbouring cafe - however in the center stands for something, which the photographer with the eyes of the love regards: his wife. Rita.
